Promoting Reading in Bulgaria
In April 2006, prior to the accession of Bulgaria to the European Union, the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Education and further partners such as the Library Association signed a memorandum for a national reading policy as well as taking a joint stand on the book publishing, book trade, libraries and culture clubs. The Bulgarian Book Association of libraries and publishers joined this memorandum, and the national programme ‘Reading Bulgaria‘ was initiated. Pertinent experience from German initiatives, projects and libraries was brought into this programme: in November 2005, the Goethe Institute Sofia had organised an event
‘Reading: an Investment into the Future’ with information on reading promotion in Bulgaria and German. This event was visited by more than 100 librarians from public libraries. Public libraries in Bulgaria pay special attention to reading promotion activities for children, such as idea and drawing contests, reading events with wll-known writers, websites etc.

It is a non-profit organization in private favour, established in 1994. The Association has more than members - book publishers, book distributors and book agents, who are responsible for over 90 percent of book publishing in Bulgaria.
