The Australian Council for Adult Literacy (ACAL) supports adult literacy promotion. It thus provides a forum offering an opportunity for practical exchange, and the Council also supports research on adult literacy promotion. Singapore Literature Prize

The Singapore Literature Prize is a biennial competition organised by the National Book Development Council of Singapore. It aims to stimulate public interest and support for creative writing in Singapore as well as to promote the Singapore literary talent through due recognition to outstanding published works by Singapore authors in any of the four official languages: Chinese, English, Malay and Tamil.

Das Festival “Die vier Jahreszeiten des Buches“ ist das größte Literaturfestival in Polen. Es findet parallel in mehreren Städten statt. Das Festival besteht aus vier Events: Pora Poezji / Lyrikzeit (Februar), POPLIT (April), Pora Prozy / Prosazeit (October), Pora Kryminalu / Krimizeit (November). Gäste des Festivals waren bisher u.a.: Jonathan Caroll, Eduardo Mendoza, Boris Akunin, Alexandra Marinina, Michel Faber, V.S. Naipaul, Paul Lins.

A Book, A True Friend (Promoting Adult Reading in Portugal)

The project aims to improve the reading habits of (young) adults, e.g. university students, by a wide range of activities. These include creative writing courses, lectures, meetings with authors and illustrators, competitions, reading for aesthetic purposes. The poject is coordinated by National Reading Plan Commission – GDBL and performed by libraries and other community-based institutions.

In 1998, the organisation of Portuguese libraries signed a Protocol with the Ministry of Justice (through the Directorate-General for Prison Services) aimed at extending the National Reading Promotion Programme to prisons. Several initiatives have been developed as part of this agreement: Purchase and donation of books for prison libraries; programmes to raise awareness of the importance of books and reading; encounters with texts and their authors (weekly or fortnightly sessions over a period of three or [ ... ]

The Vital Link (pomoting reading in the United Kingdom)

The Vital Link aims at promoting creative reading skills (reading for pleasure) and improving adult literacy: the campaign started with a pilot promject in 2001/2002 and it was funded within the Skills for Life Framework from 2003-2006, entering a new phase in 2006 (funding continued by the then ministry of education). Evaluation has proven that the concept of linking adult learners with libraries, and inspiring them to read, improves their confidence, literacy and social skills.- National Literacy Trust [ ... ]
