School libraries in focus of expert discussion
School libraries have systematically been set up in the United States since the 1960s, in order to ensure that dealing with information and knowledge hold high priority even at school. In Germany, the issue of school libraries has recently come into focus in expert discussions owing to the debate concerning all-day schools, learning outside the classroom, consequences of the PISA study and early years’ education.

Stipend for two experts from Germany
The "Librarian in Residence" program of the Goethe Institut New York offers two German experts in the field of school libraries a residence scholarship in the United States (presumably Florida), i.e. an opportunity of experiencing school libraries in the USA and of gaining a profound insight into the conditions and operations of school libraries in the USA. The scholarship will include visits to school libraries and to librarian training centers, participation in workshops as well as fostering discussions and contacts with colleagues and officials.

The "Librarian in Residence 2010" program is organised by the Goethe Institute New York in close collaboration with the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and Bibliothek & Information International, the commission responsible for international exchange at the German library and information association, Bibliothek & Information Deutschland (BID). The New York Goethe Institute and BI-International will cover the costs of travelling to the US, accommodation and a flat rate of daily expenses. This residence scholarship for experts will probably take place in November 2010 according to agreement with the scholarship holders. Goethe Institute New York will support the scholarship holders in plannning their program, preparing their travel, seeking accommodation and contacting local authorities. A good knowledge of English is indispensable for the applicants.

Experience, ideas and impressions on the weblog
Librarians in residence will be expected to keep a weblog diary on the website of the New York Goethe Institute and communicate their experience to their home library in Germany and to librarian circles. They will moreover write a final report that will be published on the BI-International website and they will also write an article for the expert press regarding their stay, their experience and their concept for practical realisation. The organisers further encourage scholarship holders to submit a presentation to the annual conference of librarians in Germany, the Bibliothekartag.

Application deadline February 28, 2010
Librarians in Germany who are active in the field of school libraries are invited to submit their application until February 28, 2010, by sending an e-mail to Brigitte Döllgast. Application forms are accessible for download from the Goethe Institute New York website. A jury will select the scholarship holders. Successful candidates will be informed in late March 2010.
